Cedar Shingle Siding Painting in South Kingstown
Cedar shingles are all over South Kingstown, from Wakefield to the shore. We prep and paint them so the finish holds up to salt air, sun and wet springs.
Painting cedar shingle siding is slower than painting clapboard. Every shingle has edges and gaps, and cedar has natural tannins that bleed through the wrong primer. Done right, it looks sharp for years.

Why Cedar Shingles Need Their Own Approach
Tannin bleed
Cedar contains tannins that can bleed through latex paint as brown or orange stains, especially on bare or newly exposed wood. A stain-blocking primer on bare cedar is what stops it.
Moisture
Shingles that stay wet, behind shrubs or under overflowing gutters, hold moisture, and paint over damp wood peels. After washing, we let the siding dry fully before any primer goes on.
How We Prep and Paint Shingle Siding
- A gentle wash to remove dirt, mildew and salt film without blasting the wood fibers
- Scrape and sand loose and peeling paint
- Prime bare wood with a primer suited to cedar
- Caulk where trim meets siding, not between shingles
- Two finish coats, brushed into the shingle edges
We do not caulk the gaps between shingles. Those gaps let water drain and the wood dry out. Sealing them traps moisture behind the paint.
Paint, or Leave Them Natural?
Some owners let their shingles weather to gray, and that is a fine choice. Once shingles are painted, though, they need to stay painted. If your shingles were stained before rather than painted, we will look at what is on there now and tell you straight what will bond to it.
Cedar Shingle Painting Across South County
South Kingstown, Narragansett, North Kingstown and Exeter all have shingle-style homes that take the full weather off the water. We paint them across all four towns, spring through fall.

Questions, answered
Can you paint cedar shingles that were stained before?
Often, yes, with the right prep and primer. We look at what is on the siding now before recommending anything.
Why do brown stains show through paint on cedar?
Those are tannins from the wood. A stain-blocking primer on bare cedar stops them.
Should the gaps between shingles be caulked?
No. The gaps let water drain and the wood dry. Caulking them traps moisture.
