Painting cost and estimates
How much does it cost to paint a house in Rhode Island?
It depends on the house, so the honest answer is a free written estimate. Price is driven by the size of the home, how many stories it has, the condition of the siding and trim, how much scraping, priming and caulking the prep needs, and the paint you choose. An older home with peeling clapboard takes more prep than a newer house in good shape. Call (401) 298-9371 or request a free estimate.
How much does it cost to paint a full house interior?
It depends on the house, so the real number comes from a free written estimate. Interior painting cost comes down to the size and number of rooms, ceiling height, which surfaces you want painted (walls, ceilings, trim, doors), and the repair work before painting, like patching cracks and holes. A dark-to-light color change can need an extra coat. Mario looks at all of it and puts it in writing for your interior painting job.
Do you charge for an estimate?
No. Every estimate from Genesis Painting is free and written, with no obligation. Mario, the owner, comes out, walks the job with you, and puts the scope and the price on paper so you know exactly what you are getting. You can request a free estimate online or call (401) 298-9371.
What is included in a written painting estimate?
A written painting estimate spells out what will be painted, the prep work, and the price. Ours lists the surfaces, such as walls, ceilings, trim, siding or doors, the prep steps like washing, scraping, patching, priming and caulking, and the total for the job. Having it in writing means you and your painter agree on the scope before anything starts. Get your free written estimate.
How many gallons of paint does it take to paint a house?
It depends on the square footage of the surfaces, the number of coats, and how porous the surface is. Every can lists its coverage per gallon on the label, and bare wood, rough shingles or a big color change soak up more paint than smooth, previously painted siding. You do not have to do the math yourself: the paint is already figured into your estimate. See exterior house painting.
How do I get a painting quote near me?
Call (401) 298-9371 or text (401) 588-0941 or fill out the free estimate form. Genesis Painting is based in Warwick and gives free written painting quotes in all 39 Rhode Island cities and towns. Tell us a little about the project, we set up a time, and Mario walks the job with you and gives you a clear written price.
Interior painting
When is the best time of year to paint the inside of a house?
Interior painting can be done any time of year, and in Rhode Island fall and winter are a smart time to do it. Exterior painting needs warm, dry weather, so the cold months are the natural time to get the inside done, and today's interior paints are made to dry indoors with the heat on. See interior painting or call (401) 298-9371 to plan your rooms.
How long does paint smell last after painting?
With today's low-odor, water-based paints, most of the smell fades within a few days. Fresh air speeds it up: crack a window, run a fan or the bathroom exhaust, and keep the house at a normal room temperature. Oil-based primers and enamels smell stronger and longer, so ask about them at your estimate. For nurseries and sensitive rooms, ask about zero-VOC painting.
What paint sheen should I use in each room?
A common rule is flat or matte for ceilings, eggshell or satin for living rooms and bedrooms, satin or semi-gloss for kitchens and bathrooms, and semi-gloss for trim and doors. More sheen cleans easier but shows wall flaws more. Satin is the middle ground, with a soft glow that wipes clean well. We go over sheen room by room during your interior painting estimate.
How do you fix peeling paint in a bathroom?
Peeling bathroom paint is usually a moisture problem, so the fix starts with the cause. Loose paint gets scraped and sanded back to a sound edge, the area is patched and primed with a primer made for damp rooms, and then it is finished with a paint rated for bathrooms. Running the exhaust fan during and after showers helps the new finish last. See interior painting.
How do I clean painted walls without damaging the paint?
Start gentle: a soft sponge or microfiber cloth with warm water and a little mild dish soap, then rinse and pat dry. Test a hidden spot first, and skip scrubbing pads and harsh cleaners, which can dull or shine up flat and matte paint. Satin and semi-gloss finishes handle washing better, which is why they are common in kitchens, baths and hallways. If the walls are past cleaning, a fresh coat is the fix. See interior painting.
How long does it take to paint a room?
A typical bedroom is often a one-day job for a professional painter, but it depends on the prep, ceiling height, how much trim there is, and whether it needs two coats or a primer for a color change. Rooms with a lot of patching, or a ceiling and walls together, can take longer. Your free written estimate includes a realistic timeline for your interior painting project.
Do you paint ceilings, trim and stairwells too?
Yes. Along with walls, Genesis Painting paints ceilings, baseboards, door and window trim, crown molding, doors, and tall foyers and stairwells. Ceilings with old water stains get a stain-blocking primer first so the stain does not bleed back through. See trim and crown molding, high ceilings and stairwells and water-damage ceiling repair.
Exterior painting
How often should a house exterior be painted in Rhode Island?
It varies with the siding, the exposure and how well the last paint job was prepped. Salt air near the bays, freeze-thaw winters and strong south-facing sun all shorten paint life in Rhode Island. Watch for peeling, cracking, chalky residue or bare wood, especially on trim and the sunny side of the house. When you see those signs, it is time for an exterior painting estimate.
What time of year is best to paint a house in Rhode Island?
Late spring through early fall is exterior painting season in Rhode Island. Paint needs a dry surface and air and surface temperatures above the minimum on the paint label, with no rain or overnight frost while it cures. Fall and winter are a good time to get your estimate and hold a spot for when the weather turns. Request a free estimate or see exterior painting.
What type of paint is best for the exterior of a house?
A top-quality 100 percent acrylic exterior paint is the usual choice, because it holds up well to sun, rain and temperature swings. But paint is only as good as the prep under it. Washing, scraping loose paint, sanding, priming bare wood and caulking gaps decide how long a job lasts in Rhode Island weather, and two finish coats outlast one. We go over the product and the prep in your exterior painting estimate.
My exterior paint is peeling. What can I do to fix it?
First, find the cause. Peeling and bubbling on wood usually come from moisture getting behind the paint, from painting over dirt or chalky old paint, or from painting in hot direct sun or before the wood was dry. Overflowing gutters and missing caulk are common sources of that water. Then stop the moisture, scrape and sand to sound paint, prime the bare wood and repaint. See peeling exterior repaints.
Is it better to paint or stain cedar shingles?
It depends on the look you want. Solid stain soaks in more and lets the wood texture show through, with color that looks like paint, which is why it is popular on cedar shingles. Paint forms a film on top of the surface and gives more sheen choices and a harder finish, which suits trim. We help you pick the right one for your siding; see cedar shingle siding painting.
Should I repaint my house before selling it?
Often, yes. Fresh, neutral paint is one of the simplest ways to help a home show well in listing photos and at showings, and it covers scuffs, stains and dated colors. Focus on the rooms buyers see first, plus any peeling exterior trim, and start before the photographer comes. See real estate listing painting or call (401) 298-9371.
Can you paint a two or three story house?
Yes. Genesis Painting paints multi-story homes, including tall gable ends and high trim that need the right ladders and a careful setup. A taller home takes more time and setup than a ranch, which is one reason every price comes from a free written estimate instead of a flat rate. See multi-story exterior painting or exterior painting.
Gutter cleaning
What is the best month to get your gutters cleaned?
In Rhode Island, the most important cleaning is in late fall, after the leaves are down, and a second cleaning in spring clears what winter left behind. Most homes need it at least once or twice a year, and homes under oaks, maples or pines can need it more often. Clogged gutters overflow onto siding and trim and can push water toward the foundation. Book gutter cleaning in Warwick and across RI, or see wooded-lot gutter cleaning.
What does gutter cleaning include?
Gutter cleaning means clearing the leaves, needles and packed debris out of the gutters and making sure the downspouts flow freely, so rain drains away from the house instead of spilling over. We clear the gutters and downspouts, and if we spot a sagging run or an overflow stain on the siding, we point it out. See gutter cleaning or call (401) 298-9371.
How much can I expect to pay for gutter cleaning?
It depends on the house, and the estimate is free, so you know the price before we start. Gutter cleaning cost comes down to how many feet of gutter the house has, how many stories, how easy the roof edge is to reach, how packed the debris is, and the number of downspouts. A one-story ranch with light leaves is quicker than a tall house under big trees. Call (401) 298-9371 or see gutter cleaning.
Is it worth paying for gutter cleaning?
For most homes, yes, because of what overflowing water does to a house. When gutters clog, rainwater spills over the edge and runs down the siding and trim, which leads to peeling paint, staining, mildew and rot over time. It can also soak the ground next to the foundation. Keeping gutters clear is one of the cheapest ways to protect an exterior paint job. Pair it with power washing and gutter cleaning.
Do you offer gutter cleaning near me in Warwick?
Yes. Genesis Painting is based in Warwick and offers gutter cleaning in Warwick, West Warwick, Cranston, East Greenwich and all 39 Rhode Island cities and towns. Late fall, after the leaves come down, is the most important cleaning of the year. Call (401) 298-9371 or text (401) 588-0941 or book on the gutter cleaning page. Power washing
Should a house be power washed before painting?
Yes. Paint only bonds well to a clean surface, so washing off dirt, chalky old paint, mildew and salt film is the first step of a good exterior paint job. After washing, the siding has to dry fully before scraping, priming and painting. Washing is part of our exterior painting prep, and we also offer power washing on its own.
Can you use a pressure washer on vinyl siding?
Yes, when it is done with the right pressure and technique. Too much pressure, or spraying upward, can force water behind vinyl panels or damage them, so siding should be washed with lower pressure, a cleaner made for mildew, and the spray aimed down with the laps. That removes green growth and grime without harming the siding. See vinyl siding pressure washing.
What is the difference between pressure washing and power washing?
Most people use the two terms for the same thing: spraying water at high pressure to clean a surface. Technically, power washing uses heated water and pressure washing uses unheated water. For a home, what matters more is matching the pressure and cleaner to the surface, gentler on siding and painted wood and firmer on concrete. See power washing for siding, walkways and exterior prep.
How long should siding dry after power washing before painting?
Siding should be completely dry before any primer or paint goes on, which is often a day or two depending on the weather, the sun and how porous the surface is. Wood and shingles hold water longer than vinyl or aluminum. Painting over damp wood is a common cause of peeling and bubbling later, so drying time belongs in every exterior painting schedule.
Can power washing remove mildew and green growth from siding?
Yes. Most of the green and black growth on Rhode Island siding is mildew and algae that thrive on the shady, damp sides of a house. A wash with the right cleaner and pressure removes it along with the dirt it feeds on. Washing does not repair failing paint, so if the paint underneath is peeling, it is time to plan a repaint. See power washing.
Scheduling and process
How soon can you start?
It depends on the season and the size of the job. We call you back quickly, set up a time to see the project, and give you a real timeline in the written estimate. Exterior painting is booked for the warmer months, while interior painting can be done all year. Call (401) 298-9371 or request a free estimate to get on the schedule.
Do I need to be home while you paint?
Not always. Many homeowners are there for the walkthrough at the start and a final look at the end, and at work in between. For interior jobs, we agree up front on access, which rooms we are in each day, and where pets will be. For exterior painting, power washing and gutter cleaning, you usually do not need to be home as long as we can reach the outside of the house. See our services.
How do you protect my floors and furniture?
Before painting starts, floors are covered with drop cloths, furniture is moved to the middle of the room or out of the way and covered, and outlet covers, hardware and fixtures are protected or removed. Edges are cut in by hand for clean lines, and the work area is cleaned up at the end of each day so you can use your home. See interior painting.
Can you paint in the winter in Rhode Island?
Yes, inside. Interior painting works all winter because the house is heated and interior paints dry well indoors. Exterior painting has to wait for warmer, dry weather, because paint needs air and surface temperatures above the label minimum to cure. Winter is a good time to get your exterior estimate and plan ahead. See interior painting or request a free estimate.

Licensing and insurance
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. Genesis Painting is licensed and insured, registered with the Rhode Island Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board as RI Reg. #GC-26905. We are happy to show proof of insurance before any work starts. Hiring a registered, insured contractor protects you if something goes wrong on the job. Call (401) 298-9371 with any questions, or read our reviews.
How do I find a good painter?
Check three things before you hire. First, registration: search the contractor's name or number on the Rhode Island Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board's public lookup (Genesis Painting is GC-26905). Second, ask for a certificate of insurance. Third, read real reviews. Then get a written estimate that spells out the prep, the surfaces and the price, so you can compare painters on the same scope. See free estimates.
Is it worth paying someone to paint your house?
For most homes, yes. A licensed, insured painter brings the prep skills, the ladders and equipment, and the accountability that most DIY jobs miss. Prep is where paint jobs succeed or fail, and a pro knows how to scrape, patch, prime and caulk so the finish lasts. You also have registration and insurance behind the work. Genesis Painting is licensed and insured, RI Reg. #GC-26905. See our painting services.
What do customers say about Genesis Painting?
