Basement and Playroom Painting in Smithfield
Turn a dark, dated basement into a bright playroom, office or family room. We check for moisture first and use paint that stands up to kids.
Basement painting is not the same job as painting an upstairs bedroom. Concrete, block and below-grade drywall each need the right primer, and the room has to be dry before anything goes on the wall.

Check for Moisture First
Paint will not fix a wet basement. If water is coming through the foundation, the paint will blister and peel no matter what the can says. Before we paint a basement, we look for white chalky deposits on block walls, damp spots, peeling old coatings and a musty smell.
A simple test: tape a square of plastic to the wall for a day or two. If moisture collects on the wall side of the plastic, water is coming through the foundation. If you have an active leak, get that fixed first. We will tell you straight if a wall is not ready for paint.
Painting Concrete and Block Basement Walls
Prep and primer for masonry
Bare concrete and block are porous and can carry alkali that breaks down ordinary paint. We clean the walls, scrape loose old coatings and use a primer or paint made for masonry so the finish actually bonds.
Finished basement drywall
If your basement is already finished with drywall, it paints much like any other room. We patch the dings, prime the patches and use a mildew-resistant paint, which is a smart choice in any room below grade.
Playroom Paint That Survives the Kids
A playroom takes crayons, toy trucks and handprints. For walls that get scrubbed, we recommend an eggshell or satin finish over flat. It wipes clean without the paint coming off with the dirt. A lighter color also goes a long way in a basement with small windows.
Low-odor options
Basements do not air out as easily as upstairs rooms. We can use low-odor, low-VOC paint so the space is usable sooner and the smell does not drift up through the house.
Basement Painting Across Smithfield and the Northern Towns
Smithfield has plenty of raised ranches, colonials and newer homes with full basements that are ready to become real living space. We paint basements and playrooms across Smithfield, North Providence, Johnston, Scituate and Cranston.

Questions, answered
Can you paint a basement that gets damp?
Once the moisture source is dealt with, yes. Paint over an active leak will blister and peel. We check the walls when we come out for the estimate.
What paint do you use on concrete basement walls?
A primer or paint made for masonry, on clean, sound walls. Ordinary interior paint does not hold up on bare concrete or block.
What finish is best for a playroom?
Eggshell or satin. Both wipe clean far better than flat paint, which matters when kids are involved.
