Smoke and Nicotine Stain Sealing and Repaint in North Providence
Yellowed walls and ceilings from years of smoking bleed right through regular paint. We clean them, seal them with a stain-blocking primer, and repaint so the stain and the smell stay gone.
Maybe you just bought a North Providence house where someone smoked for twenty years, or you are getting a family home ready to sell. The fix is the same either way: clean, seal, then paint.

Why Nicotine Stains Come Back Through New Paint
Nicotine and tar soak into drywall paper and plaster and leave a sticky, yellow-brown film. Latex paint is water-based, and the water pulls that residue right back up to the surface as it dries. That is why a smoke-stained room can look fine the day it is painted and turn yellow again a week or two later. The smell usually comes back with it.
Two coats of good paint over a stained wall is not the fix. The film has to be washed off, and what is left has to be locked in under a primer made to block it.
How We Seal and Repaint a Smoke-Damaged Room
Step 1: Wash the walls and ceilings
We wash down the walls, ceilings and trim with a degreasing cleaner to cut the film, then rinse. Primer grips a clean surface, and getting the bulk of the residue off is half the odor battle.
Step 2: Seal with a stain-blocking primer
Once everything is dry, we prime with a stain-blocking primer. For heavy nicotine that usually means a shellac-based or oil-based primer, because many water-based primers let the stain bleed. Shellac-based primers also seal in odor, which is why they are the standard choice for smoke damage.
Step 3: Two finish coats
With the stain sealed, we roll on the finish coats in the colors you pick. Ceilings get the same treatment as the walls. Smoke rises, so the ceiling is usually the worst surface in the room.
What Else Holds the Smell
Paint takes care of walls, ceilings and trim. Carpet, curtains, closet shelving and ductwork can hold smoke odor too. If the smell lives in the carpet, it will still be there after we leave, so it pays to deal with those at the same time. When we walk the job, we will tell you what we see.

Questions, answered
Can you just paint over nicotine stains?
No. Latex paint over nicotine lets the stain bleed back through, often within days. The walls have to be cleaned and sealed with a stain-blocking primer first.
Will the smoke smell be gone after you paint?
Sealing the walls and ceilings with a shellac-based primer locks in the odor held in those surfaces. Smell held in carpet, curtains or ductwork has to be handled separately.
Do the ceilings need to be done too?
Almost always. Smoke rises, so the ceiling usually carries the heaviest stain in the room.
